How to add a new ISO language (lombard) as an official supported language by Crowdin

Hello! I noticed Crowdin supports multiple italian dialects: Friulian (fur-IT), Venetian (vec) and Ligurian (lig) Here’s the official list: Language Codes | Developer Portal .

Is it possible to add Lombard? ISO 639-3 (LMO). Lombard is spoken by 3,5 million people. It’s officially recognized as a language and is widely used across multiple countries (Italy and Switzerland being the main ones). Also there are way more lombard speaking people than ligurian ones
I already know that you can add custom languages to single projects, but by supporting it directly on Crowdin we could support this beautiful language and make translator’s lifes way easier.
Let me know. I really wish to preserve this language and knowing there’s Klingon and not Lombard in the official supported language list makes me smile.
Hope to recieve a response from the community, cheers!

Hi, it’s possible to add custom language. You can add as many languages as needed using that feature. Just ask your project owner/manager to do this for you:

Thank you for your answer Dima!

I know you can ask the owner/manager. But it’s a short term solution and it limits the language availability for all Crowdin users.

Also by doing so the availability of the language is limited to single projects. Many software managers aren’t keen on creating custom languages unless they’re offically supported by Crowdin. A long term solution should be adopting officially languages that are not supported yet.

I have a follow up question: Why is venetian, friulan and ligurian officially supported and lombard no? They are all italian dialects. Are the first three more suited for software translation? Or is there some kind of language priority?

I don’t want to sound rude, is just curiosity. Hope to recieve some answers. I love the work you are doing!

Hi Dizro,

The inclusion of certain languages or dialects as officially supported on Crowdin is influenced by a variety of factors, including user demand, the presence of a standard written form, and the availability of translators who can work with the language.

While Venetian, Friulan, and Ligurian are supported, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are more suited for software translation compared to Lombard. It could be that there has been more demand or advocacy for these languages, or that they have a more standardized written form that facilitates their use in software localization

We understand the importance of supporting a wide range of languages to meet the diverse needs of our users. Crowdin is continuously working to expand the list of supported languages, and user feedback is an important part of this process

We appreciate your input and will take it into consideration as we strive to improve language support on our platform.
